I Want You to Know We're Still Here by Esther Safran Foer, review by Robin Templin

Unspeakable. In some Jewish families the holocaust is a constant presence, albeit rarely discussed. Recently, Esther's mother mentioned a shocking piece of information. Esther's father (now deceased) had a previous wife and daughter. Both were killed in a concentration camp. And, so begins the author's journey of discovery.

As Esther points out, the term “Holocaust Survivor” usually implies someone who survived a concentration camp. But there are survivors of ghettos, survivors of Displaced Persons (DP) Camps, survivors of violence, shame, and horrific sacrifices. On every page, I thought "How do I not know this?" Thank you, Esther, for speaking the unspeakable.
