Come try out Watermark's book club devoted to award winners! We read books that have been short-listed or have won awards across different genres, primarily fiction but occasionally non-fiction and even poetry. And the Winner Is...meets in the cafe at 10:30 a.m. on the third Thursday of each month and is led by Watermark's own Bronwen Johnson. She has her Master's degree in English from Wichita State University and has studied Renaissance Drama as well. Bronnie has two cats named after American authors, so if you ever wondered who would win in a fight between Ernest Hemingway and Sylvia Plath, it's Syl every time!
A Short Introduction to And The Winner Is...:
1. What book has been your group's favorite selection this past year? Why? Kafka on the Shore by Haruki Murakami (Kafka Award 2006) seems to have been a favorite so far. Our members admitted that it was not a book they would probably have read on their own, but they were really happy to be introduced to it and ended up loving it! Another book that generated lots of discussion was Sing, Unburied, Sing by Jesmyn Ward (2017 National Book Award). Both books deal with the past and how it affects the present, so they unintentionally turned out to be good companion reads.
2. How would you describe your book club to a prospective member? And the Winner Is...Book Club exposes readers to lesser-known prize-winning books (both fiction and non-fiction) as well as exploring the major award winners that everyone is discussing. Our members tend to be eclectic readers who don't mind taking a chance on a new author or book. Even if you didn't care for the book, your understanding of it will broaden. We value all interpretations and encourage a wide-ranging discussion.
