A Short Introduction to Books & Bites Book Club:
1. What book has been your group's favorite selection this past year? Why? Opinions tend to vary, but several books stimulated great discussion. George Saunders's Lincoln in the Bardo captured our imaginations with the recognition that literary works form dialogues with one another. The group definitely thought News of the World, by Paulette Jiles, was a powerfully told story about loneliness in the rough 19th century American West. And Lawrence Osborne's Beautiful Animals, about British and American ex-pats behaving badly in the Greek Islands, was wickedly good.
2. How would you describe your book club to a prospective member? We try to select a varied range of recently published books. We usually end up with novels that we hope are tightly written. Longer novels in the 600-900 page range rarely make the list. Nonfiction books have a better chance if written with a strong sense of narrative. At discussion time, we enjoy learning from each other.
