What’s New
This week in the store:
1) "Junie B., First Grader: One-Man Band" by Barbara Park
(Random House, ISBN
0375825363, $3.99.) For any of you who are old lovers of this
beginning chapter
book series, or for those of you that would like a fun read that is perfect
for
second to fifth graders, you’ll find it here.
2) "Days to Celebrate" by Lee Bennett Hopkins (Greenwillow,
ISBN 0060007656,
$17.99.) This is a beautifully illustrated chronicle of daily events
in
history, holidays, birthdays, inventions that are causes to celebrate life
for
everyone. Also included is an array of poetry from people such as Walt
Whitman,
Christina Rosetti, and Carl Sandburg.
3) "100 Best Books For
Children" by Anita Silvey
(Houghton Mifflin, ISBN
0618278893, $20.00.) A fabulous book for adults describing the best
of
children’s literature including plot synopses and age ranges for each
choice,
this book is a "must have" for adults responsible for children’s
reading or for
lovers of children’s literature.
Teacher Featured Book:
Come into the store and enjoy a 30% discount on this item:
Reviving Ophelia: Saving the Selves of Adolescent Girls by Mary
Pipher (Ballantine,
ISBN 0345392825, $14.95.) This book is useful for anyone who works
with or
lives with pre-teen or teenage girls. It’s an amazing examination of
American
girls and their challenges today.
Spotlight On:
For kids ages 0-7 years:
"Polar Bear Night" by Lauren Thompson (Scholastic Press, ISBN
0439495245,
$15.95.) This is one of the Notable Books of 2004 as selected by the
New York
Times. The Times describes it as a "comforting bedtime story to
teach children
that darkness can be a friend." Beautiful monochromatic
illustrations simply
done in geometric shapes should appeal to younger kids.
For kids ages 8-12 years:
"Chasing Vermeer," by Blue Balliett (Scholastic Press, ISBN
0439372941, $16.95.)
Think of this book as The DaVinci Code for kids; they’re going to be
enthralled
by the dips and turns in the plot and a surprise ending that nabs them.
For kids 12 years and up:
"Beat Poets" (Everyman's Library Pocket Poets, ISBN 0375413324,
$12.50.) This
is a beautiful little book filled with the best of the Beat Generation
poets
such as Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg, Diane DiPrima, and others.
