Watermark Teacher Feature Special– November 16, 2009

NEW EVENT: Doreen Cronin is coming to Watermark this Tuesday!

Doreen Cronin reading & book signing: Tuesday, November 17 at 2:00 p.m.

Dear Teachers, Educators, and more:

I’m happy to say that Doreen Cronin, bestselling author of many wonderful children's picture books(including “Wiggle” and “Click-Clack-Moo: Cows That Type”) will come to Watermark for an afternoon reading and book signing tomorrow at 2:00 p.m.

Ms. Cronin's appearance is part of the fifth annual Kansas Reads to Preschoolers Week organized by the Kansas Center for the Book at the State Library of Kansas. “Wiggle,” written by Cronin and illustrated by Scott Menchin, is the center's 2009 selection.

You can find more information on Kansas Reads to Preschoolers (along with downloadable bookmarks!) on the Web site of the Kansas Center for the Book: http://skyways.lib.ks.us/orgs/kcfb/wiggle/index.html

To purchase or reserve books for the signing, please call us at Watermark at (316) 682-1181.

(If you can’t attend the signing, we would be happy to hold books for you and have them signed in your absence. No problem! Otherwise, we’d love to see your smiling faces.)

FEATURED BOOKS

All these books are for preschool age, in hardcover, and illustrated by Scott Menchin.

* “Wiggle” (Atheneum, 9780689863752, $14.99)

This book features an energetic little dog in colorful cartoon illustrations as he moves, shakes, and shows young children many fun ways to be active:

"Do you wake up with a wiggle?
Do you wiggle out of bed?
If you wiggle with your breakfast,
It may wind up on your head."

The rhyming text is filled with fun moves that subtly celebrate the joy of staying fit. Menchin’s partly-collaged pictures incorporate photos and textures that give added humor to the little pup’s already silly activities. This book and its companions are great to have tucked away for rainy or wintery days when kids must stay indoors and need constructive ways to use up their wiggle energy!

* “A Tu Ritmo (Wiggle Spanish Edition)” (Lectorum, 9781933032054, $13.99)

With the very same pictures and story as “Wiggle,” this edition has been translated into Spanish by Yanitzia Canetti.

* “Bounce” (Atheneum, 9781416916277, $14.00)

This winning follow-up shows our puppy friend bouncing into all sorts of fun and interesting situations: in rain puddles, at the market, and--uh, oh!--on the couch cushions. (“Bouncing on the couch is called big bouncing trouble!”) “Bounce” invites youngsters to jump, hop, leap, and also bounce balls. There’s even a bit of tried-and-true philosophy involved: “It's better to have bounced and bumped... than never to have bounced at all!” Now, that’s some bouncy resilience!

* “Stretch” (Atheneum, 9781416953418, $15.99)

“Stretch” is the newest addition to Cronin and Menchin’s active pup series, and it's my favorite. We find our doggy friend engaged in stretching out all over the place. He does yoga poses, learns from a giraffe, and blows great big bubbles with his stretchy bubble gum. He’s a stretching expert! He sees birds stretch their wings, elephants stretch their trunks, and lions stretch their mouths to ROAR. There’s even an inchworm that stretches to move from place to place. Like its companions, this is a great picture book for encouraging physical activity, and it can be used to begin or end a quiet time like naptime or story time. Youngsters will learn to stretch their bodies and their minds!
