We’d like to send out a big Thank You to everyone who attended our Teacher Appreciation Day on Sept. 16. We hope you enjoyed the discounts, the prizes, the free giveaways, and the chance to talk books with your devoted booksellers. We plan to make it annual event, so be sure to put a little mark in your way-ahead calendar and plan to join us next year. In the meantime, we’ll keep looking for ways to show you our appreciation. For starters, we have some great events lined up...

Upcoming Author & Book Release Events:
Eoin Colfer Reading and Book Signing – this Saturday, Oct. 7, 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Our big news this week is that Eoin Colfer will be at Watermark this Saturday to give a reading and to sign books. Mr. Colfer is a former teacher and the bestselling author of the "Artemis Fowl" fantasy adventure novels for young readers. He’s coming all the way from Ireland to meet his young fans and to regale us with tales of his whacky family and writing process. His new book is "Artemis Fowl: The Lost Colony." (Look below for a young reader's review!)
Some us here at Watermark had the pleasure of hearing Mr. Colfer speak at a recent booksellers’ convention in Minneapolis, and we can testify that he is a funny, funny man. A highlight of his breakfast talk was his impression of his son Sean, who has an imaginary twin, also named Sean, for whom he serves as an interpreter. (A common response to a parental instruction is a long pause, followed by the relayed "Sean says ‘no,’ Daddy.") Saturday will be a great chance to meet this much-loved author as well as an opportunity to hurt yourself laughing.
We have Mr. Colfer’s books on hand now, and we can have copies signed if you’re unable to attend his reading. Please encourage your students to come, and let them in on a little secret: his first name is pronounced just like "Owen."

Lemony Snicket book-release party on Friday the 13th, 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. The End is Near, my friends.
In this case, "The End" is the thirteenth and final book in Lemony Snicket's "Series of Unfortunate Events." Join us on Friday the 13th for the book’s release, when we’ll have tasty snacks of a lemony persuasion; odd and interesting giveaways suited to devoted young readers, inventors, and biters; and a series of unfortunate activities. Call or e-mail us to pre-order your copy of the book (we'll find you one that's not too musty or damp), and anticipate the moment when the last secrets are revealed. In the meantime, young readers can wile away the hours piecing together the misleading clues in the recently released book "The Beatrice Letters" reviewed here:

Young Reader's Review
Eoin Colfer's "Artemis Fowl: The Lost Colony" (Hyperion Books for Children, 0786849568, $16.95)
Artemis Fowl isn’t your ordinary fourteen-year-old. Being an under-cover super genius, he has already saved the world numerous times and mastered Quantum Physics; however, in "Artemis Fowl: The Lost Colony," the competition is about to get fierce, as a twelve-year-old girl, Minerva, steps into the spotlight.
Nearly as brilliant as Artemis himself (if not as brilliant), she shares interest in the same prize: a small imp that appears on stage in Sicily and will unlock the doors to a world of demons. The story unfolds as a desperate attempt to rescue the creature and save Hybras, a demon world that is about to collapse, before all its supernatural residents are warped into time and space, exposing demon-kind to the modern world. This could be Artemis’ toughest challenge yet, but with the help of his bodyguard Butler, his fairy-friend Holly, and the computer-whiz centaur Foaly (along with many other otherworldly characters), saving the demon world might just be possible.
"Artemis Fowl: The Lost Colony" is Eoin Colfer’s fifth and quite possibly best novel in the series, with brilliant descriptions, creative humor, and a story that will have you hooked, no matter what your age. He puts excitement and personality into his writing in a way that is rarely seen, rivaling novels such as J. K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series.
