Salad People and More Real Recipes: A New Cookbook for Preschoolers & Up by Mollie Katzen

When my daughter was in pre-school, we used a
cookbook called Pretend Soup. Favorite recipes included Zucchini Moons
(slices of zucchini sautéed in butter then covered with grated parmesan cheese)
and Chocolate Banana Shakes (chocolate milk, a banana and a few ice cubes all
blended together). We still make these and others regularly for a snack or as
part of a meal. Included is a little extra affection — or at least more than
our routine lasagna, pot roast or grilled chicken.
Mollie Katzen has released her third cookbook for children. The books have become standard fare for home and classroom kitchens. Each of the twenty recipes in Salad People is presented twice: once in a typed format with detailed instructions for the older cook, and the second in a visual storyboard format, for the child. Partnering with a preschool teacher, Katzen takes into consideration the end result, making it something children like to eat. Also taken into account is attention span, ingredients, color, temperature, texture, and flavor. From Tiny Tacos (open faced mini sandwiches on tortilla chips) to focaccia to Sweet Potato Surprise, you and your child cooks will enjoy a variety of healthy and yummy recipes.
