"All-Star Superman Vol. 1" by Grant Morrison & Frank Quitely (DC Comics, 9781401209148, $19.99)

As a longtime comic book reader it is not often that I find a book that can genuinely impress me, especially when talking about a character so overexposed as Superman, but "All-Star Superman" does just that. This isn't your father's Superman, in fact it isn't even the Superman you or I grew up with. Comics superstar, Grant Morrison, has re-imagined the Man of Steel in a fresh, funny and bizarre way in his own trademark science fiction, adventure flare. However don't be afraid of not being able to follow the story. All of the iconic figures are still there: the Daily Planet, Lois Lane, Lex Luthor, the Fortress of Solitude, Smallville, Ma and Pa Kent, and the funniest characterization of Jimmy Olsen ever! (Actually making the redheaded photographer quite likeable.) This volume, which collects the first 6 issues of the series, starts off with a bang, and a very interesting premise: Superman is dying. Even Superman has a few things he'd like to do before he dies, and first thing on his list is revealing his secret identity to Lois Lane. Something he does with hilarious and unexpected results!

You don't need to know 70 years of comic book history to understand this volume. It distills the very basics of the Superman mythos and presents them in a very accessible way. But longtime DC Comics fans can also enjoy a lot of more obscure comics references peppered here and there.

"All-Star Superman Vol. 1" left me completely invigorated about the Superman legend, my mind buzzing with all the fun and exciting science fiction elements introduced here, and of course, eagerly waiting for Vol. 2.
