Assassination Vacation by Sarah Vowell

Sarah Vowell is amazing. We've enjoyed the stories
of the odd goings-on in her life from her previous books, Take the Cannoli,
and The Partly Cloudy Patriot, and we have delighted in listening to her
spin us yarns on National Public Radio's "This American Life." We know that
Vowell has an incredible obsession with American history, and her latest book,
Assassination Vacation, is a hilarious account of her expedition across
the United States to visit any landmark or historical site even remotely
connected with a political assassination. The excitement with which she chronicles the most minute detail of each historical event revisited on her journey nearly tempts me to change my major. Experiencing the Dry Tortugas through Sarah's mind is unrivaled: "It’s breezy, but peaceful. It is so pleasant I can almost imagine taking a vacation here without the extra tourist glamour of presidential killers and mosquito-borne disease." If reading little-known anecdotes of historical murder isn’t reason enough to love this book, then the sheer Sarah Vowellness of the biting, sardonic prose should be completely convincing.
