The Confessions of Max Tivoli by Andrew Sean Greer

The first line of this book is what caught my eye, "We are each the love of someone’s life."

Alice was Max’s.

This story is set at the turn of the twentieth century in San Francisco,
where Mrs. Tivoli gives birth to a most unusual child. Max Tivoli suffers
from a strange disease that causes him to grow older mentally, but physically he becomes younger.

While for some this would seem a huge disadvantage, for Max it allows him at three different times in his life to fall in love with Alice, the woman he is destined to be with. Max has the advantage of his appearance changing so drastically that she does not recognize him. So, while most of us only have one chance at love, Max has multiple opportunities to try again to win Alice’s affection.

This was a captivating story about the trials of Max’s very peculiar life.
