"The Kitchen Counter Cooking School" by Kathleen Flinn
Don’t be put off by the silly cover; this is not a cute book. What it is is the next installment in Kathleen Flinn’s chronicle of her culinary education. After her stint at Le Cordon Bleu, which she shared in her first book, The Sharper Your Knife, the Less You Cry, Flinn finds herself in the familiar position of the at-loose-ends-post-graduate. And, as she considers her own future with food, she begins to observe that of others. After a revelatory experience with a processed foods laden cart in the grocery store, Flinn becomes curious about how our past experiences and current life choices effect how we cook and eat. What follows is an experiment in which she gathers a community together to examine their culinary habits and to execute a series of “makeovers”. This casual gathering of the “kitchen counter cooking school” is an entertaining and educational read. I found myself in the stories of the nine novice cooks and even picked up a few makeover tips of my own. As Flinn asserts at the close of this chapter of her life as a chef, “We live, we learn, we teach one another. Isn’t that the way it should be?”
