Monday September 27. Great Typo Hunt reading & signing. 7:00 p.m.

The Great Typo Hunt: Two Friends Changing the World, One Correction at a Time by Jeff Deck and Benjamin Herson.

Magazine editor Jeff Deck and bookseller Benjamin Herson conducted a three-month exercise in field orthography (that's spelling!). As an editor, Deck is a foe to all typos but no simple grammar cop. Typos, he says, signal a larger problem than mere carelessness: it's miscommunication. To combat the problem, he formed TEAL: the Typo Eradication Advancement League and took his zeal on a roadtri[ around the U.S. with his friend Benjamin Herson in tow.

Wherever the two found typos, they tried to correct them--occasionally employing stealth, though usually asking permission. In this book, Deck uses their stunts to explore some thorny areas of communication, class, and capitalism while acknowledging that our fear of using the wrong language sometimes leads us to sacrifice what we say to how we say it.

Champion spellers and grammar mavens, untie! Come on done for an evening of lusty language fun.

Watermark will celebrate the publishing debut of local Wichita writer (and past Watermark employee) Clare Vanderpool with a reading and signing of her brand-new middle-reader novel (for ages 9 to 12 years old):

Moon Over Manifest by Clare Vanderpool.

The book is set for release on Oct. 12. Please call Watermark to reserve copies: (316) 682-1181.

Clare sets Moon Over Manifest in the fictional small town of Manifest, Kansas--based on the southeastern Kansas town of Frontenac, home of both her maternal grandparents. Drawing on stories she heard as a child, along with research done in town newspapers, yearbooks, and graveyards, Clare situates her story amid a rich and colorful history.

Here's a synopsis:

Abilene Tucker feels abandoned. Her father has put her on a train, sending her off to live with an old friend for the summer while he works a railroad job. Armed only with a few small possessions and her list of universals, Abilene jumps off the train in Manifest, Kansas, aiming to learn about the boy her father once was.

Having heard stories about Manifest, Abilene is disappointed to find that it’s just a dried-up, worn-out old town. But her disappointment quickly turns to excitement when she discovers a hidden cigar box full of mementos, including some old letters that mention a spy known as the Rattler. These mysterious letters send Abilene and her new friends, Lettie and Ruthanne, on an honest-to-goodness spy hunt, even though they are warned to “Leave Well Enough Alone.”

Abilene throws all caution aside when she heads down the mysterious Path to Perdition to pay a debt to the reclusive Miss Sadie, a diviner who only tells stories from the past. It seems that Manifest’s history is full of colorful and shadowy characters—and long-held secrets. The more Abilene hears, the more determined she is to learn just what role her father played in that history. And as Manifest’s secrets are laid bare one by one, Abilene begins to weave her own story into the fabric of the town.

Come help us celebrate this new Kansas writer!
