Watermark Books & Cafe and Wine Dive will host author Stephanie Danler for a wine and cheese tasting, an author talk, and signing of her novel Sweetbitter. The event will take place at Wine Dive, located at 4714 E. Douglas, just across the street from Watermark Books. Danler will discuss two wine flights and take questions during her presentation. Cheeses will also be served. Her novel Sweetbitter was named a best novel of 2016 because of her beguiling portrayal of the restaurant business.
The event is ticketed. Each ticket includes wine and cheese tasting at Wine Dive, as well as a copy of the paperback novel Sweetbitter. The tickets are $35 + tax. Space is limited.
Newly arrived in New York City, twenty-two-year-old Tess lands a job working front of house at a celebrated downtown restaurant. What follows is her education: in champagne and cocaine, love and lust, dive bars and fine dining rooms, as she learns to navigate the chaotic, enchanting, punishing life she has chosen. The story of a young woman's coming-of-age, set against the glitzy, grimy backdrop of New York's most elite restaurants.
Danler deftly conjures the nonstop and purely adrenalized world of the restaurant conversations interrupted, phrases overheard, and suggestions below the surface. Evoking the infinite possibility of being young in New York with heart-stopping accuracy, Sweetbitter is ultimately about the power of what remains after disillusionment, and the wisdom that comes from experience, sweet and bitter.
Danler is a writer based in Brooklyn, New York. She holds an MFA in creative writing from the New School.
