“The Cat’s Table,” Michael Ondaatje’s most recent novel, is already on the short list for Canada’s Giller Prize, and I’m sure it will land on many more award lists. It is the story of a young Sri Lankan boy, named Michael, who travels by ocean liner to join his mother in England, where he will attend school. Ondaatje has a delicate and empathetic touch for characterization, and an eye for the small, poetic, and telling detail. There’s never a “driving” plot in an Ondaatje novel, rather his stories reveal themselves, like a tiny pieces of paper that unfold themselves in water to become flowers.
