“Happy Pig Day!” An Elephant and Piggie Book by Mo Willems
As we enter a season chock-a-block with holidays, I know it’s Turkey Day that’s weighing on many of our minds, but I need to talk to you about a different festive occasion altogether: Pig Day!
Pig Day is a day for pigs. For celebrating pigs. For doing pig dances and other pig things. Piggie knows this, and she is all set to celebrate. Piggie’s friend Gerald, on the other hoof, feels left out. He has never celebrated Pig Day. Is he even allowed? With piggy pandemonium all around, he wishes he could join in. What’s an elephant to do?
Leave it to Mo Willems to make a pithy, pigcellent early-reader book that is both poignant and funny. He homes in on a key experience of early childhood: realizing that a friend’s family may celebrate different holidays or may observe the same occasion differently. It can cause confusion and discomfort, or if handled well, it can spark learning and new joy.
Don’t worry, I won’t give away the patented Mo-Willems surprise ending here. But rest assured, Piggie ushers her friend Gerald into the hearty hug of Pig Day: there are soon squeals and cavortings all around. After all, Pig Day is a special day, and Pig Day is for everyone!
